Is it ever really too late to begin again? A reflection on lifelong learning, changing beliefs, bucket-list dreams, and the courage to follow your heart at any age.

In This Article:

  • Why “it’s too late” is usually a limiting belief rather than a fact
  • How people continue learning, growing, and reinventing themselves throughout life
  • Why fulfillment matters more than recognition or success
  • How Mark Twain transformed his beliefs and worldview over time
  • Why now is the perfect time to begin following your heart’s calling

I’ve recently discovered that my local Community Senior Center offers a myriad of classes for those of us over 55, and it definitely supports the belief that it’s never too late to learn something new. You can learn ceramics, sewing, line dancing, ballroom dancing, Tai Chi, painting, bonsai, guitar, yoga, pickleball, water aerobics, basket weaving, Japanese, creative writing, and the list goes on.

And the teachers themselves range in age from young to older, showing that it’s also never too late, or too early, to share your talents and your wisdom with the world.

Telling ourselves that it’s too late to learn something new, or to change, or to start a new career, or whatever it is our heart yearns for, is nothing but a mental block. It’s not a fact. It’s only an opinion. Sometimes that opinion is ours, and sometimes it’s one we’ve adopted from others.

Breaking Through Limiting Beliefs

I don’t believe that there’s anything in life that it’s too late for. It’s never too late to forgive someone, it’s never too late to tell someone you love them, it’s never too late to start over, it’s never too late to do better.

It may take longer than it might have when we were younger, or if we didn’t have a full-time job, or a family to take care of. Yet it’s still possible. The missing element may simply be your willingness not to let your beliefs, your doubts, and your insecurities stop you from whatever it is that you’ve been wanting to do, and perhaps told yourself it was too late.

Many well-known authors and artists did not attain success in the eyes of the world, or maybe in their own eyes, until they were older. Colonel Sanders, founder of KFC, was in his early sixties when he launched his first location. Grandma Moses started painting in her seventies and became famous in her eighties.

Growth Has No Expiration Date

If your dream is to climb Mount Everest, know that someone did succeed in that venture at the age of 80. Flying to space? William Shatner did it at 90. And even people who toiled at their art for years may not have become recognized for their talents and creativity until well into later age.

So if you ever find yourself saying that it’s too late to start something new, know that that is a fallacy. It’s a limiting belief that can prevent you from living your dreams.

And the goal is not success or even the end result. The goal is the process and the enjoyment in the moment. The goal is fulfilling your heart’s wishes, not whether you gain accolades from the world. The only accolades that count are yours. What counts is the feeling of well-being and satisfaction that comes from following your inner vision and dreams.

Changing Who We Become

It’s not only talents or careers that can evolve with age. Our beliefs, our attitudes, and even our understanding of life can evolve as well.

I remember reading a biography of Mark Twain, and in his younger years, he was far from being the person he became. Having grown up in the South in the 1800s, he had many of the era's common traits. He was a racist and harbored many of the common prejudices and attitudes of those times.

However, as he traveled, met people with different opinions and cultures, and had his own life experiences, he changed his attitudes about many things and became the Mark Twain who was an outspoken critic of the South and of society and politics in general. He is an example that it is never too late to change opinions and attitudes. He started out as a comic and satirist and ended up as a renowned and revered philosopher.

Why Wait to Begin?

Many people create bucket lists of things they want to do before they die. But why wait? Why postpone it? Start now, even in tiny increments.

I have a friend who is leaving this week to walk The Camino in Spain. She, her husband, and her son will be doing a three-week section of the trail. She mentioned that this was an item on her bucket list, and now, instead of keeping it as a someday dream, she is putting on her walking shoes and taking the first of many steps.

And perhaps that is what so many of our dreams are waiting for: not the perfect time, not the perfect circumstances, not even certainty that we can do it all perfectly or completely, but simply the willingness to begin.

Whatever you seek to learn, you don’t even have to wait for a class to be offered in your neighborhood. You can find something online to do at whatever time of day or night suits your schedule.

If there’s something you've always wanted to learn, start now. It’s amazing how much is available. I was looking up Qigong the other day and was amazed to see the unending number of people teaching it online, whether on YouTube or elsewhere, whether free or for a fee.

Listening to Your Heart’s Calling

So maybe the first step is to make a list of the things that you think are either too late to do or you don’t have time to do or whatever other limitation you have accepted as a block to doing that particular thing.

And remind yourself that it’s never too late to learn something new, never too late to heal, never too late to follow your dream, never too late to become who you are meant to be. And only you know, or perhaps only your heart knows, who you are or can be.

There is no one-size-fits-all plan for life. Each one of us is unique, and each one of us has our own song to sing, our own path to walk, our own legacy to establish.

It may not be as grand as the career of Mark Twain, or as lofty as climbing Mount Everest, but whatever it is, it must be true to what resides in your heart. It will resonate with that recurring thought of something you’d like to do, or something you’ve always wanted to do, or something that perhaps just now is coming to the forefront.

And perhaps that recurring thought is not nagging you. Perhaps it is calling you. Perhaps it is the voice of your own inner wisdom reminding you that life is still unfolding, still inviting you, still offering you another doorway to walk through.

Trust yourself, trust your dream, trust your future. It’s never too late.
